Shane won first prize in the jewelry category for a henna-inspired cuff bracelet he made.

Editor's note: This is the third installment of a new weekly series in which we will highlight the special accomplishments of neighborhood kids or teenagers.

Each week, we will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as our Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to danielle.vickery@patch.com.

- School: Harriton High School senior; Shane lives in Bryn Mawr.

- Accomplishment: Shane won first prize in the jewelry category of the PSEA "Touch the Future" Art Show for a sterling silver henna cuff bracelet he made. More than 1,200 pieces of art were submitted to the show (34 from the Lower Merion School District), from more than 20 school districts in Bucks and Montgomery counties, according to a Lower Merion School District news release, and less than a quarter of all pieces submitted were juried into the show. The show runs through Feb. 27 at the Abington Art Center in Jenkintown, the release states.

- Key to awesomeness: "I was a little self-impressed because I haven’t taken an art class really ever except this year, when I decided to take metal arts," Shane said. "I've been doing pretty well at it. I thought there would definitely be people better than me in that area of art since I know people have been taking it more seriously. We go up to Metal Arts 4, and I was only in Metal Arts 2. I thought other people could do more interesting things."

Shane received an assignment in class to design a cuff bracelet, and was inspired by pictures of henna-style tattoos he came across while surfing the Web. Shane is interested in art and is planning on going to college for a degree in architecture. He had to do a number of things for his portfolio but likes working in watercolor the most, he said.

At Harriton, Shane also runs track and rows crew. In his free time, he likes playing guitar and doing art. He wants to thank his art teacher, Miss Labrinakos.

And the cuff bracelet?

"I ended up giving it to my mom, and she really liked it a lot," Shane said. "People at the awards ceremony said they all tried it on and enjoyed it."
