BMFI to Host Third Annual Oscar Party

Red carpet attire or costumes inspired by nominated films are encouraged.

The Bryn Mawr Film Institute is hosting its third annual Oscar Party at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.

The event will feature a live simulcast of the awards show, a buffet by JPM Catering, some complimentary drinks and a cash bar, and—new this year—a silent auction.

While the main draw in the silent auction is a weeklong vacation in Aruba, there are a number of other cool prizes like golf outings, memberships to organizations like the Barnes Foundation and the Main Line Art Center, and gift certificates for restaurants, clothing stores and salons, said Devin Wachs, BMFI’s public relations coordinator. There are about 70 items total in the silent auction, she said.

Partygoers will be provided with ballots to see if they can guess who the winners will be, and attendees are encouraged to dress up either as if they were walking the red carpet themselves or in costume from one of the nominated films.

“I’m really hoping to see some ‘Black Swan’ costumes,” Wachs said. “We’ve had characters from ‘Avatar,’ ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘The Dark Knight’—people have fun with it.”

Two friends also came dressed last year as the title characters from "Julie and Julia," Wachs added.

A few people have been lucky enough to win tickets to BMFI’s Oscar Party in some contests BMFI has held. One contest asked participants to come up with the best fake acceptance speech, and another encouraged someone to invent the best awards category that doesn’t already exist—the winner was “Best Film That Wasn’t Nominated 10 Years Ago,” Wachs said.

The event has been gradually growing, and BMFI anticipates about 200 people will turn out this year, Wachs added.

Tickets are $55 for BMFI members and $65 for the general public. All proceeds benefit BMFI, which is a non-profit organization.

Tickets will be sold right up until the event, where tickets will be sold at the door, but those who wish to attend are encouraged to purchase their tickets ahead of time online, Wachs said.
