Philadelphia Phillies Success Up to Big Three

The question of whether the Philadelphia Phillies have a successful 2013 is up to the top three pitchers, not the hitters.

They are the Big Three. But we're not talking about Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins for the Philadelphia Phillies. We're talking about Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. And it's that Big Three—as opposed to the Big Boppers—who will decide whether the Phils will have success in 2013. From the first two games, we all should worry. Hamels—the former World Series MVP with the big start who was pitching his first Opening Day—got shelled by the Atlanta Braves. Maybe it was Opening Day jitters or the chill in the air, but we Phillies fans expect Hamels now to perform like Steve Carlton when he takes the mound. In other words, we expect nothing short of perfection. That didn't happen Monday night as Hamels was sent to the showers…

Up Close with Phillies Pitcher Cole Hamels

The Hamels Foundation just opened its retail store in Bryn Mawr.

Earlier this year Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi Hamels, founders of the Hamels Foundation charity, opened the foundation's retail store in Bryn Mawr. Hamels is the cover story of the April issue of Main Line Today magazine. Here is an excerpt from the story: Cole Hamels is grinning from ear to ear as Jon Dorenbos joins him in front of photographers and TV crews before the Hamels Foundation’s Diamonds & Denim fundraiser at Center City’s Crystal Tea Room. With his white T-shirt, denim overalls and matching cap, the Eagles’ long-snapper looks like an outcast from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. And, wait, is that woman wearing painted-on overalls and nothing else? (Look away!) With its unorthodox mix of sports superstars, …

A Patch Q&A with Heidi & Cole Hamels

The Phillies pitcher and his wife, Newtown Square residents, debuted the Bryn Mawr office of their charitable foundation Friday night.

Bitingly cold, Friday night was no time to loiter on a sidewalk. But pedestrians at Lancaster and Merion avenues in Bryn Mawr, one after another, couldn't help themselves. There, conducting press interviews behind a storefront window, stood one of the most recognizable couples in the Delaware Valley: Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi Hamels, founders of the Hamels Foundation charity. The Hamelses were throwing a private party at 880 W. Lancaster Ave. to celebrate the opening of the foundation's new office and retail shop, formerly located in Center City. Beginning Monday, fans can browse and purchase merchandise between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Proceeds benefit the five-year-old foundation and its education projects—…

Hamels' Charity Moving to Bryn Mawr

The Hamels Foundation, started by Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife Heidi Hamels, is relocating from Philadelphia. Autographed memorabilia will be sold at the Lancaster Avenue office.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels' education charity, The Hamels Foundation, is moving its offices and signed-memorabilia gift shop to a vacant Bryn Mawr retail building, representatives of the foundation and Lower Merion Township told Patch on Wednesday. The relocation from Center City to 880 W. Lancaster Ave. should happen sometime around mid-November, said GN Kang, the foundation's director of Philadelphia-area operations. Hamels and his wife, Heidi, are expected to attend a grand opening tentatively set for January. The famous couple started the foundation in 2008 with the goals of helping inner-city schools and establishing a school in the impoverished African nation of Malawi. In its first three years, according to tax …

For Phillies, End of An Era or Errors

After a long streak of post-season play, Tuesday's trading deadline officially ended an era.

It seemed automatic. For the past half-dozen years, the Philadelphia Phillies were playoff bound and General Manager Ruben Amaro was adding those important pieces to the puzzle at the trading deadline. But Tuesday, Amaro became a seller instead of a buyer, shipping Shane Victorino back to the Los Angeles Dodgers and then flipping outfielder Hunter Pence to San Francisco. Amaro probably also tried to unload pitchers Clif Lee and Joe Blanton and outfielder Juan Pierre but the price was too high. It doesn't mean, though, that Amaro is done dealing. If he can get some players through waivers in the next month, then the team will really begin its retooling process. Yes, like last year's Philadelphia Eagles -- the magic just wasn't there for the…

Is Phillies' Pitching Worth the Price?

Philadelphia Phillies contract to ace Cole Hamels puts a lot of payroll in pitchers.

To the delight of most Philadelphia Phillies fans, Cole Hamels will be wearing pinstripes for a number of years to come. With the signing of Hamels to a six-year, $144 million deal with a vesting option for a seventh year, the Phillies are telling fans that they haven't thrown in the towel, even if this season might be lost. Hamels' contract is the richest in team history. (Yes, it tops Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Ryan Howard, Roy Halladay, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.) But is the price for pitching worth it?  Vote in our poll and tell us what you think in the comments section below. With Hamels locked up, the Phillies have now invested $68 million in three starting pitchers for 2013. That's a lot of green for Hamels, Halladay and Cliff…

Dino, all Amaro has done is open the check book for high priced players. ANYONE could sign Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, etc... if they had that payroll. What good GMs do is find young cheap players that can help the team for years before getting big money deals that break the bank and put you in a luxury tax situation. In fact as much as people hated Ed Wade, he was the one that found Howard, Utley, …   more ›
