Thank Your Local Veterans for Their Service

There are more than 21 million veterans in the United States and Patch says "thank you" on Veterans Day.

Here's a rundown of Veterans Day 2012 facts from the U.S. Census Bureau: Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Thank a veteran. Add your note of thanks in our comments section below. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. Normal Collection of Trash and Recycling for Veterans Day

The holiday falls on Sunday but will be observed Monday.

Refuse and recycling will be collected in Lower Merion Township on Monday and throughout next week according to the regular schedule, not the adjusted schedule for holidays, the township has announced. Veterans Day falls every year on Nov. 11, but when it is a Sunday as it is this year, the holiday is observed on Monday. Township government offices and libraries also will be open on Monday.
