School District Expansion Plans Advance

Monday night, Lower Merion's Board of School Directors authorized administration to seek bids for three of four schools included in the $24 million project.

Lower Merion School District's proposed $24 million school district expansion plan took another step forward Monday night when the Board of School Directors authorized administration to seek bids for three of the four planned school expansion projects. Lower Merion began looking an options for expansion following an enrollment study in June that projected the district's population would exceed its capacity as early as the 2013-14 school year for some district elementary schools. Monday night, the board unanimously voted to authorize Gilbert Architects Inc. to proceed with the designs for Gladwyne Elementary School, Penn Valley Elementary School, Bala Cynwyd Middle School and Welsh Valley Middle School additions. The board also authorized …

I am pleased to see that this School Board did not 'rubber stamp' the Administration's plans, instead they worked to reduce the cost significantly by $8 M from the original plans and come up with creative solutions - like modulars at WVMS instead of renovating the St. Justin building (that would likely be demolished anyway and is far away from the rest of the buildings). Likewise, they ensured …   more ›

LMSD Revamps Plans, Timelines For District Expansion

Welsh Valley's expansion may be scaled down, and in 2013-14, the school could use St. Justin Martyr Church for classrooms.

Updated 12:30 p.m. to add additional information about capacity projections. About 30 residents attended a special Lower Merion Board of School Directors meeting on Monday night, at which Director of Operations Pat Guinnane and Superintendent Christopher McGinley presented updated plans for a proposed $29.4 million expansion for district schools.  The most notable changes were scaled down plans for a Welsh Valley Middle School expansion and the suggestion that St. Justin Martyr Church be used for temporary classrooms in the coming school year. Guinnane also told the board that the original timelines for the $29.4 million expansion for district schools were "unrealistic," and presented a new timeline for construction at each of the four …

The Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners has no jurisdiction over the Lower Merion School District. The school district has its own governing body, the Board of School Directors, which has taxing authority and is solely responsible for decision making in all school matters. Township commissioners have no more say in school district business than any other citizen residing in the Lower …   more ›

A land surveying contract for possible school expansion projects was also approved.

In a swift meeting of the Lower Merion Board of School Directors on Monday night, a new board president and vice president were chosen, administrator salaries were approved, and permission was granted for a company to conduct land surveys in advance of possible school expansions. With Enrollment Booming, LMSD Plans For Expansion

Conceptual plans call for an estimated $29.4 million in work to improve Lower Merion School District schools.

With a "very significant facilities issue" predicted following an enrollment study conducted in May and enrollment accelerating, Lower Merion School District has begun formulating plans to expand district facilities. Monday night’s Board of School Directors meeting included the presentation of some conceptual plans for expanding four district schools. The plans, presented by Gilbert Architects, target Gladwyne Elementary, Penn Valley Elementary, Bala Cynwyd Middle School and Welsh Valley Middle School, and total roughly $29.4 million.  LMSD Superintendent Chris McGinley stated that the plans were preliminary and the district is in no way tied to them. However, the plans act as a "placeholder," said Danielle Hoffer, vice president of …

1.99 Percent Tax Increase For 2012-13

The Lower Merion Board of School Directors unanimously passed the 2012-13 school year budget on Monday night.

Residents will be subject to a 1.99 percent tax increase next year, following the Lower Merion Board of School Directors' unanimous approval of the 2012-13  school year budget at their regular business meeting Monday night.  The 2 percent figure boils down to a $114 increase for the median Lower Merion home, worth $250,000. The $212,809,404 budget passed Monday night is the same revised budget presented at the board's April 16 meeting. It calls for no program cuts or layoffs, and the tax increase is down from the originally proposed 3.9 percent increase called for in January. In January, the district netted $3.3 million in savings from a bond sale and subsequent payoff to year-2002 bond holders. That money helped reduce the tax increase, …

Tax and spend Democrats have ruled Lower Merion and Narberth for years. Raise taxes, pay through the nose for employees salaries, and benefits and just spend like everyone in the township has deep, deep pockets. I have yet to hear of a Democrat politician say no to additional taxes and spending.   more ›
