Newsweek Ranks Harriton Among Top US High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

Newsweek has ranked Harriton High School as the #219 high school in the country. Locally, Lower Merion High School was ranked #321 and Haverford came in at #742, while Strath Haven High School was put at #291, Radnor High School at #255, Springfield High School at #648, and Marple Newtown High School at #1096. In Pennsylvania, Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia received the highest ranking of #56. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Buy Andy Reid's Stuff at Harriton this Saturday

Eagles players, including LeSean McCoy, will sign autographs at the moving sale.

Andy Reid is leaving Philadelphia, but you can keep a piece of him with you. This Saturday at Harriton High School, the longest tenured coach is franchise history is holding a moving sale where fans will get a chance to buy some of Eagles memorabilia he'd accumulated over the years, as well as Reid family personal items like luggage, household items, Christmas decorations and women's wear. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Laurel House and Harriton Football. Harriton, Lower Merion Rank in Top 40 PA High Schools

190 Pennsylvania schools made the U.S. News and World Report rankings.

Harriton High School ranked No. 39 and Lower Merion High School ranked No. 17 in a list of about 200 Pennsylvania High Schools by U.S. News and World Report.  For Harriton, U.S. News and World Report states: "The AP participation rate at Harriton Senior High School is 31 percent. The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 19 percent." The publication describes Lower Merion students as the following: "The AP® participation rate at Lower Merion High School is 45 percent. Harriton Grad Has Transformed the Arts on the Main Line

Nancy Campbell has turned a small art center into a well-known and respected resource.

Harriton High School alum Nancy Campbell is celebrating 25 years as executive director of the Wayne Art Center this year. When the Penn Valley native came to the art center in the mid-1980s it was a small cinderblock shack of 2,600 square feet, she recalled. Today, the art center gets international submissions of work and has made a name with its Craft Forms and Plein Air exhibits. It has grown to 28,000 square feet, and it may not end there. "They opened up so many opportunities," she said of the center's two expansions. There are now two main art galleries, a gift shop, a ceramics studio, sculpture studio, jewelry studio, children's studios and a culinary studio. Help Harriton Alum Throw First Pitch at Phillies Game

The Harriton Choir and Band will perform the National Anthem at a May game.

Saturday, May 4, is Harriton High School Night at Citizens Bank Park. The Harriton Choir and Band will perform the National Anthem at the Phillies' game against the Miami Marlins. If 500 or more tickets are sold through a special deal with Harriton, Kyle Helton, a 1993 graduate, will be able to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Helton, of Ardmore, is the founder of Next Level Sports, Inc., which "develops the leadership potential of today's youth to achieve their personal best in academics and sports through skill-based programs that teaches positive values, wellness, responsibility, conflict resolution, and goal setting," according to its website. Drugs Found on Harriton Student, Police Say

Police say the student damaged a school wall.

Disorderly Conduct and Drug Possession A Harriton High School student was cited for disorderly conduct and possession of a small amount of marijuana on March 13. According to police, school administrators brought the young man to their offices because they believed he was selling drugs. The student was screaming, throwing things and damaged a wall in the school; nobody was hurt. Marijuana and a bottle of pills were found in the student's possession, police say. He will also be cited with institutional vandalism. Criminal Mischief On March 16, a woman reported that since Feb. 23 someone has been little-by-little removing lining from her 2009 Lexus near the area of Merion and Montgomery avenues in Bryn Mawr. Harriton Junior Spending Semester in DC

Abri Bernstein is passionate about global issues and human rights.

Harriton High School junior Abri Bernstein is spending this semester at The School For Ethics & Global Leadership. She is the only Harriton student in the program; in fact, she is the first student from Pennsylvania to enroll. Each week the 24 students have a different global case study and hear guest speakers, work with experts and one another to come up with solutions and learn how to think ethically, Bernstein told Bryn Mawr Patch. She takes all of her high school classes, but in the program she will focus her efforts on genocide intervention policy. When Bernstein moved to the Bryn Mawr area for high school, she brought the idea of Gems NOT Genocide, an organization that she founded in 7th grade after watching a documentary that …

School Board Talks High School Scheduling

Rising enrollment could prompt changes in a few years.

Lower Merion school board members heard community survey results on Monday that indicated strong support for the current class-scheduling system for the two high schools but also concern over the need to account for growing enrollment. Former Harriton High School principal Steven Kline began the meeting with a presentation on the results of over 1,900 surveys from students, faculty and parents.
