Gladwyne Library Accessibility Project Put on Hold

The proposed project included a new handicap-accessible bathroom, a reconfigured staff workroom and a new Young Adult section in addition to an elevator.

Lower Merion's Board of Commissioners voted on Wednesday to move the Gladwyne Library's accessibility project “to the end of the line” in the schedule of the township-wide library renovations, reports Main Line Media News. At a community meeting in February, a majority of the people who spoke at the meeting, which included new sketches of the proposed addition that would house an elevator, said they wanted alternatives to making the library accessible. The library’s board was in negotiations with Lower Merion Township over an agreement that the township would pay for renovations to the privately-owned building, which was a point of contention as well at the meeting. Money and Access at Issue in Gladwyne Library Renovation

Some community members said public money should not be invested in a privately-owned building.

When members of the Gladwyne community met Wednesday night for a meeting about the proposed accessibility renovations to the Gladwyne Free Library, almost everyone agreed that they love the library. And that’s where the agreements seemed to end. In a spirited discussion, a majority of the people who spoke at the meeting, which included new sketches of the proposed addition that would house an elevator, said they wanted alternatives to making the library accessible. Currently the library’s board is in negotiations with Lower Merion Township over an agreement that the township would pay for renovations to the privately-owned building. That was a point of contention as well at the meeting. Gladwyne Civic Association president Bob Foulk Jr. …

Doesn't the law require the accessibility of public buildings? As the library is in a privately owned building then would it cost less to move it to an available publicly owned building that is already outfitted? Does Gladwyne have one? Ought it buy this building? Or do all those literate folks with e-readers believe that all can have e-readers and borrow free books from ,mmm, which library used …   more ›

I want to go on record as being "for" the renovation s which would make all 3 floors,as well as a restroom, handicapped-accessible. We have a significant number of senior citizens residing in Gladwyne at Waverly Heights who may not have ready transportation to Ludington Library. In addition, I value and support the programs offered only at the Gladwyne Library, especially the book discussion …   more ›

Gladwyne Library Renovations: What Do You Think?

See the attached PDF for details of what will be discussed at Wednesday night's meeting.

Lower Merion Commissioners are set to discuss proposed renovations at Gladwyne and Ardmore libraries, after talks were tabled at last week's meeting for lack of information about the projects. The proposed renovations at Gladwyne Library would cost the township roughly $1.5 million, the most expensive component of which would be the installation of an exterior elevator. The township has released a memo answering several questions from residents about the proposed renovations, including: "If the township is proposing to put $1.5M into a building that it does not own, what conditions, if any, does the township intend to place on this donation by the township?  Response: The Township would be likely to protect its investment by a legal …

Future of Gladwyne Library Renovations Uncertain

Concerns have been expressed about the cost and necessity of adding an elevator.

An agenda item about renovating Gladwyne and Ardmore libraries simultaneously was tabled early Thursday morning for lack of information about the projects. Three Gladwyne residents spoke out against the proposed $1.4 million renovations, the most expensive of which would be the installation of an elevator. Though no one objected to the elevator on the basis of accessibility, there were concerns about what how the installation of an elevator would affect cost, the historical nature of the building and parking. "I don't think you're even close to ready to couple this with the Ardmore project," said Gladwyne resident Brad Moser. Commissioner Scott Zelov said $1 million for an elevator at Gladwyne Library sounded expensive and added he did not…

Community Split Over Proposed Gladwyne Library Renovations

The main issue discussed was the potential installation of a $1.4 million elevator.

The installation of an elevator at the Gladwyne Library was at the center of discussion during Tuesday night's community meeting at the Riverbend Environmental Education Center. The elevator, the largest of the $1.4 million recommended renovations to the library, was proposed to increase accessibility. "If this project is approved we will finally have six libraries that would be accessible to everyone," Charlie Bloom, head of the Lower Merion Township Library Foundation said. "Libraries are crucial to the well-being of this township." While no one opposed the renovation on the basis of accessibility, some residents were concerned with the cost, the aesthetic appearance of an elevator, parking and density issues as well as changes to a …

This library is unique. The upstairs was never designed for holding books, but over the years it has taken on a new life. So if those events are critical - and I question this, then an elevator is a must. But let's remember that generous families like the Frazers, have personally funded accessibility improvements to the site. It is a community building, owned by the community, not the township. …   more ›

Weigh In On Gladwyne Library Improvements

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

After a recommendation to proceed with renovations to the Gladwyne and Ardmore Libraries was tabled earlier this month, a community meeting is slated for Tuesday to give the public a chance to weigh in. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Riverbend Environmental Education Center prior to the Gladwyne Civic Association meeting. The project's architect will be present at the meeting to receive public input on the project that includes installing an exterior elevator at the main entrance of the library. The motion to proceed with the renovations was tabled until next month.
