AIDS Activist, Oscars Attendee Chats with BMFI

The documentary "How to Survive a Plague", featuring Peter Staley, opens Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

Before the Academy Award-nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague plays at Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Wednesday, moviegoers can read BMFI's interview with Main Line native Peter Staley, one of the AIDS activists it features. Bryn Mawr Film Institute public relations manager Devin Wachs spoke with Staley, who grew up in Berwyn and will be at Wednesday's screening. Staley attended the Academy Awards ceremony, which he described like this: It was amazing, kind of dreamlike. As a gay kid, I grew up watching the Oscars from as early as I can remember and I never missed one. I never dreamed in a million years that I’d end up attending them. BMFI Ready to Expand From 2 to 4 Screens

The institute needs Lower Merion Township to approve construction permits Dec. 19.

Bryn Mawr Film Institute is a week away from final permission to expand from two to four screens at its Lancaster Avenue theater. The Lower Merion Board of Commissioners' Building and Planning Committee approved BMFI's request speedily at Wednesday night's meeting. A final vote from the regular board, whose full membership comprises the Building and Planning Committee, is scheduled for Dec. 19. Executive director Juliet Goodfriend told Patch she is hoping to start construction on the $3 million project in February and finish within about nine months. Construction is expected to cause minimum disruption to existing theater business. The institute needs township permission to consolidate parcels on the west side of its property. The $3 …
