Church-Renovation Reactions Vary By Neighborhood in Lower Merion

Neighbors of an endangered Ardmore sanctuary want to see it converted to apartments. Residents in Gladwyne mostly opposed a similar plan on Righters Mill Road at Wednesday's township public hearing.

It was clear Wednesday night that Lower Merion's Board of Commissioners wasn't nearly ready to decide whether to move forward with a zoning scheme that would ease some restrictions for owners of former churches and historic halls seeking to convert them to housing. That did not diminish how urgently several residents expressed their opinions at the public hearing—some for and some against, the divide corresponding in most cases to the neighborhoods they live in. Neighbors of the First Baptist Church of Ardmore, whose owner has obtained a demolition permit, asked township officials to provide incentive for a different path. "Our position fundamentally is, do what you need to do to preserve this structure," said Jesse Roche, a member of the …

With each situation being very different, these issues should be handled on a case by case basis. If the church is located in an area of multi-family housing, as the Ardmore Baptist Church is, then allow it to be converted to multi-family housing. Don't allow the demolition of buildings that make our area unique. Why does it take LM so long to make a decision. This hearing has been on the books …   more ›

The list is not exhaustive—at least, we think—so if you can name any other movies that have filmed here, tell us in the comments. Also following this list are a few instances within film and television that mention Lower Merion locales (for example: Betty Draper, from the television …

Parts of Unbreakable were filmed on Cynwyd Road in Bala Cynwyd. It was the "rain scene" and after hours of setting up the equipment to produce the rain, Shamayalan did not think there was enough water and he wound up holding a hose. Also, I don't buy kisses . . . showed the Bala movie theater, with Jason Alexander sitting on the curb on Bala Avenue.   more ›

Celebrate the Queen's Jubilee Locally

Here are five ways to get a little British in honor of the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II was only 25 when she became the head of state of a faltering post-war power. Today, at 86, she remains a symbol of spirit and stamina for Britain and is the oldest person to reign over the country. Only Queen Victoria, who took the throne at an earlier age, enjoyed a longer reign. Here are five ways you can celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year on the throne, an event called the Diamond Jubilee.

Witnesses report that the canister was thrown out of a vehicle's window around 2 p.m.
