Lower Merion Debates Allowing Alcohol on Township Property

The recommendation would only allow alcohol to be served at events raising funds for township facilities and services.

Lower Merion officials are debating allowing alcoholic beverages to be served at fundraisers for township facilities and services, though no decision has yet been made. Specifically, Friends of Ludington Library have expressed an interest in holding a wine and cheese party there to raise funds, Assistant Township Manager Pat Ryan told commissioners at a township properties committee meeting Feb. 1. Parks Friends groups have also said they would like to hold fundraisers at parks or on trails, where beer or wine could be available.  “This is aimed at fundraisers to enhance services at a township facility,” Ryan said. “We’re not suggesting opening this to all sorts of unaffiliated nonprofits.”  Events would be approved on a case-by-case basis…

Groups with fundraisers are petitioning the government.

Lower Merion Township doesn't let people drink on public property. Should it make exceptions for fundraising events? Among the topics scheduled for discussion at the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Feb. 1, is an administration proposal to relax the township's ban on alcohol possession and consumption on public properties, including parks. Groups that want to hold fundraisers in support of township facilities and services, such as libraries, have asked for exemptions, Assistant Township Manager Pat Ryan told Township Manager Doug Cleland in a Jan. 27 memo, a copy of which is attached to this article. Drinking by adults on township property should be allowed. Just what is it that we are trying to avoid with the current ban? I'll agree that nobody wants to take their family to the park and see a bunch of drunks hanging around making trouble, but there are already drunken disorderly and public drunkenness laws on the books to take care of that.
