The Philadelphia Phillies won't have Shane Victorino or Hunter Pence to solidify the outfield this year.
Philadelphia Phillies fans are getting hopeful this spring that the team might be able to turn it around after an off-year. They're hopeful that Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Roy Halliday will rebound from injuries and that Cliff Lee will return to form. They're hopeful that Cole Hamels, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz will have eben bigger seasons than 2012. And that some key additions in the bullpen like Mike Adams and Chad Durbin will provide some balance. But who is going to play the outfield? That is possibly the biggest question mark facing the Phillies this spring training. No longer does the team have Shane Victorino or Hunter Pence in the fold. In fact, the Phils have questions at all three positions. Centerfield does have a player. …

The Acura NSX: a newer classic.
There’s something special about a rare car. A rare car has the ability to draw stares and twist heads from just about everyone, regardless of his or her car knowledge. You just know one when you see one. And for some reason, there’s something a bit more special about a rare car that was built during an era of beige, cookie-cutter, reliable sedans. Sure, a Plymouth Roadrunner is rare ... but so is a Plymouth Valiant. Richard Bookler, of Newtown Square, has one of those newer rare cars. It’s a 1992 Acura NSX. And, if you want to feel old, the 21-year-old coupe wears classic Pennsylvania tags. (I suppose it’s possible to put classic tags on a rarely-driven Corolla of the same vintage, but it just wouldn’t seem right.) I think Bookler’s …
What will you tell your grandchild when his or her daily life is disrupted by immense climatic changes that you had the power to prevent?
Tree huggers, hippies, environmentalists. Shall I continue? We produce stereotypes and point fingers that distinguish people from one another daily. We want to belong. We desire the feeling of being a part of something so much that our passions and opinions manufacture gaps between us. Glancing around the cafeteria of my public high school, I can pinpoint various cliques, clubs, groups, etc. The jocks, cheerleaders, anime lovers, science Olympiad lovers, and the theater crowd. Instead of focusing on our differences, what if this world was contingent upon our commonalities? One thing that every single human being has in common is the earth. Our world as we know it is experiencing global warming and major climate catastrophes …

An introduction to Patch's Garage, a new weekly column dedicated to the world's most interesting machine.
I’m a car guy. I’ve been a car guy ever since my dad told me about the car he had when he was a kid—a then-not-so-cool 1957 Chevrolet Two-Ten. Well, maybe’s it’s still not so cool. And I’m a car nerd. I’ve probably read every issue of “Road & Track” dating back to September 1992. In fact, I remember picking it off of the shelf at a pharmacy in Jenkintown and asking my mom to buy it for me. On the cover? A black Jaguar XJ220—a then-technologically advanced, overhyped, supercar out of the financial realm of any normal person. Sure it had 540-plus horsepower and broke the 200-mph mark, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one … and it really doesn’t bother me, as its lines didn’t age well. On the other hand, a less prominent article in the …
With new Coach Chip Kelly, expect the roster of the Philadelphia Eagles to be overhauled.
The casualties continue to mount. Once the Philadelphia Eagles fired Andy Reid, you knew that any new coach coming on board would want to shake up the roster. Now that Chip Kelly is here, General Manager Howie Roseman is starting to make some roster cuts. That's expected from any team once a season concludes and a Super Bowl ends. This time of the year is the business side of football when front offices review contracts and try to cut corners to help with some manueverability with the salary cap. The Eagles are no different. The first move the team made was restructing the contract of Quarterback Michael Vick, ensuring that he wouldn't be paid $15 million next year. Then, with a healthy return of tackle Jason Peters expected, the team made…

Spring training games start Saturday for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They may not be like the 1983 team dubbed "The Wheeze Kids." But the Philadelphia Phillies squad that takes the field Saturday to start a month's worth of spring training games before Opening Day is getting a little grayer around the edges. These aren't your World Champion Phillies of five years ago. Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Carlos Ruiz and Cole Hamels are seasoned veterans now who have gone through the past few years nursing injuries and massaging egos after a season last year that put them out of playoff contention for the first time in a half-dozen years. Throw in Roy Halliday and Cliff Lee and this roster is really starting to look on the long side of 30. But don't tell Ryan Howard that. The Big Fella basically has been…

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that Quarterback Michael Vick is returning for another year.
It was the last game of the season, a horrible loss to the New York Giants. And Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick, returning for the first time in more than a month after injury, had once again been battered and bruised. But this time, Vick lashed out: blasting his teammates for a lack of effort and heart. We all thought that was the last Birds fans would ever see of the controversial QB. After all, Vick had spent most of the season injured. And when he was on the field, he was producing too many costly turnovers. He was due a bonus if kept on the roster. And about $15 million if he played next season. So everyone thought Vick would be cut right after the Super Bowl. Well, guess who's back? New coach Chip Kelly made a move that …

Philadelphia Phillies' pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater to start spring training in Florida on Wednesday.
This news for sports fans beats news that any groundhog could deliver. It's the sound of a baseball pounding a catcher's mitt with a solid thud that makes most of us feel warmer than any sunny day. On Wednesday, hope springs eternal when pitchers and catchers report to camp in Clearwater, Fla., for the start of spring training. After a dismal season last year, it's time to wipe the slate clean for Manager Charlie Manuel and company. Every team in Major League Baseball gets a new lease on life. And the Phillies could certainly use one after not making the playoffs for the first time in a half-dozen years. This spring training will be very interesting. There are so many questions for a team that didn't do as much as its competitors to …

See what Pennsylvania voters think of stricter gun laws and add your opinion.
Stricter gun laws are a topic many people are talking about. A number of local college presidents have signed a letter asking for more gun control, including Jane McAuliffe of Bryn Mawr College, Kathleen Ownes of Gwynedd-Mercy College, Joanne V. Creighton of Haverford College, Daniel H. Weiss of Lafayette College, Peyton Helm of Muhlenburg College, Rebecca Chopp of Swarthmore College, Bobby Fong of Ursinus College and Rev. Peter M. Donohue of Villanova University. Pennsylvania voters think the federal government should have stricter gun laws, according to the latest poll from Quinnipiac University. The poll found 60 percent of those polled are in favor of stricter laws, while 5 percent thought the laws should be less strict and 32 percent …

Did you breastfeed your baby?
Breastfeeding is a natural way to feed a baby but formula is another option. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends “exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months of a baby's life.” AAP reports that breastfed babies have less risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and obesity. “..choosing to breastfeed should be considered an investment in the short- and long-term health of the infant, rather than a lifestyle choice,” says the AAP. For some moms, breastfeeding comes easily. But for other moms, it can be a challenge, one that sometimes cannot be sustained. Some moms simply do not have enough milk. Other moms experience pain or have other health issues that create a problem. My son ended up in the neonatal intensive care…
