Gladwyne Cleanup Day Celebrates 40 Years

Gladwyne's Annual Cleanup Day has its 40th anniversary.

Gray skies, the occasional drizzle, and a chilly, windy day did not stop Gladwyne residents from coming out to lend a hand on the 40th annual Gladwyne Cleanup Day. Organized by the Gladwyne Civic Association and sponsored by 17 local businesses and organizations, the community effort is aimed at making people aware of the need to keep Gladwyne looking good. Litter and debris are picked up all over town and then collected for disposal at Lower Merion's refuse center.

The Riverbend Environmental Center and the Lower Merion Conservancy were on hand with nature-related exhibits for hands-on learning by the children who volunteered to help clean up. Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups provided some of the volunteers to help with the effort.  Superfresh and Waverly Heights provided food and beverages. The event began at 9 a.m. and went on until 2 p.m. with a steady stream of volunteers throughout the day. Bob Foulk, Jr., chairman of the Cleanup Day Committee and Gladwyne Civic Association vice president,  had high praise for those who contribute to the event's success.

"Residents, scouts, businesses and the township have all helped to make this a successful event the past 40 years," he said, "and we hope to be doing it well into the future."
