How the U.S. Open Will Impact You

Even if you aren't going to the Open, the Open can still impact you.

The 2013 U.S. Open kicks off at the Merion Golf Club in Lower Merion on June 10, and even area residents who don't give a hoot about golf might feel the impact of the event. 

Golf fan or no, here's how the open will impact you.

Roads Closed

The most immediate impact for people traveling near the Merion Golf Club will be road closures and traffic issues. The following roads will be closed to all traffic during the U.S. Open, including automobile, bicycle and pedestrian travel:

  • Haverford Road between College and Ardmore Avenues–closed through June 17
  • Golf House Road, between College and Ardmore Avenues–closed through June 17
  • Ardmore Avenue, between Darby and Haverford Roads–closed through June 17
  • Golfview Road, between Ardmore Avenue and Sunnybrook Lane–closed through June 17

Additionally, the following roads will be restricted or open to only residential traffic through the Open:

  • West Ardmore Avenue, between Darby and Ellis Roads–through June 17
  • Ellis road between West Ardmore Avenue and Lawrence Road–through June 17
  • College Avenue will be come one way for local residents toward Haverford Road beginning at the intersection of Coopertown Road and College Avenue through June 17.

Increased Traffic

Traffic impact from the Open is going to stretch beyond the Merion Golf Club area, according to experts. Officials say the following areas will also see some traffic problems from the golf match:

Delays during peak arrival and departure times—7-11 a.m. and 3:30-7:30 p.m. in the immediate vicinity of Rose Tree Park (RED Lot), including but not limited to the following locations:

  • I-476 South and U.S. 1 Interchange.
  • Palmers Mill Road (PA 252) between Media Bypass (U.S. 1) and West Chester Pike (PA 3).
  • E. Rose Tree Road between N. Providence Road (PA 252) and State Road.
  • Media Line Road between Palmers Mill Road (PA 252) and West Chester Pike (PA 3).
  • West Chester Pike (PA 3) between Palmers Mill Road (PA 252) and Eagle Road.

Due to U.S. Open shuttle traffic, delays can be expected during peak arrival and departure times (7-11 a.m. and 3:30-7:30 p.m.) in the immediate vicinity of Rosemont Station, including but not limited to the following locations:

  • Airdale Road between Lancaster Ave. (U.S. 30) and Montgomery Avenue.
  • Montrose Ave. between Lancaster Ave. (U.S. 30) and Airdale Road.
  • Norwood Ave. between Lancaster Ave. (U.S. 30) and Montrose Ave.
  • Lancaster Ave. between Airdale Road and County Line Road.

More Commuters

SEPTA routes in the area are going to see increased riders during the open as well, officials say. If you are on the following regional rail lines, be aware of increased passengers:

  • Paoli/Thonrdale
  • Norristown High Speed Line
