Episcopal Students Recognized for Mathematic Achievement

Six Episcopal Academy students, including one from Rosemont, were recently recognized for their individual achievement in the Mathematical Association of America's American Mathematics Competitions.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Six students were recognized for their individual achievement in the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC).

The students honored in the AMC 12 included: , of Rosemont, who had the third highest score; , of Berwyn, who had the second highest score; and Emily Li of Quangying, China, who had highest score.

The students honored in the AMC 10 included: Sean Hughes, of Newtown Square, who had the third highest score; Suzy Chen, of Hangzhou, China, who had the second highest score; and Jeffrey Hu, of Phoenixville, who had the highest score.

Based on his exam score, Jeffrey Hu also qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). He scored in the top 2.5 percent nationally to qualify for the AIME. The AMC 10 covers mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10 and the AMC 12 covers high school mathematics.

According to AMC/MAA website, the purpose of the competitions “is to increase interest in mathematics and to develop problem solving through a fun competition. Students gain the opportunity to learn and achieve through competition with students in their school and from around the world. Teachers and schools benefit from the chance to challenge students with interesting mathematical questions that are aligned with curriculum standards and at all levels.”
