Bryn Mawr Schools Get New School Zone

Two private schools petitioned for and received traffic calming twice a day.

Drivers travelling through the intersection of Montgomery and Morris avenues may have recently noticed themselves slowing down.

A new 15-mph school zone was recently installed with signs and flashing lights that slow traffic from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and 3 to 3:50 p.m. on weekdays.

"The new school zone along Montgomery and Morris avenues slows down traffic, making it safer for school students at Baldwin and Shipley as well as Bryn Mawr and Harcum colleges," said Lower Merion Commissioner Scott Zelov.

"With many students crossing the busy intersection at the beginning and end of the school day this new school zone is a welcome and overdue safety improvement in our community."

The project came about through a joint effort of the Baldwin School and Shipley School, which both wanted the zone. The zone extends down both Morris Avenue and Montgomery Avenue.

"For many years we said we need to do this," said Bob Meals, Director of Shipley's Physical Plant. "It’s a dangerous stretch."

The schools funded the project, which was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

There is no pedestrian-only light at the intersection, so when students or staff are crossing the street during those timeframes, the traffic passing them is going 15 mph, which he said increases pedestrian safety.
