Radnor Township Proposes Stormwater Abatement Fee

Several residents told the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners that they were surprised to find a notice in their mailboxes about the proposed stormwater management program that would require them to pay a fee in addition to their real estate taxes. The commissioners hope to deal with flooding that affects parts of the township, replace outdated pipes and improve stormwater management. In conjunction with the proposed storm water management fee, the commissioners also discussed the 2014 budget process and how to allocate an $8 million tax settlement that the township recently received. Board President Elaine Schaefer suggested putting $1.2 million from the tax settlement into stormwater projects to jump start the program. If enacted, the fee would be collected from all property owners, including nonprofits that don’t pay real estate taxes. The fees would increase with the size of a residential property. Commissioner James Higgins also said imposing a fee rather than increasing real estate taxes was an issue of “fairness.” An educational meeting will be hosted by the League of Women Voters on Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the township building (301 Iven Ave.).
