Narberth Council Weighs United Methodist Church Conversion Plan

Narberth Borough Council held its first conditional use hearing under a new ordinance that offers the opportunity to preserve some of the town’s landmark buildings. The application calls for the conversion of the former United Methodist Church of Narberth, built in 1920, into six condominium units. The parsonage building, or Barrie House, would be converted into three condominium units and three townhouses would be constructed on an adjacent lot. The response was mostly positive, but council members decided to take a little longer to consider potential conditions of approval. Both Narberth and Lower Merion have looked to changes in their zoning codes to open the door to adaptive reuse of older buildings to avoid demolition of culturally important landmarks.
