Ludington Library: May 2 Update

An opening date has not yet been set.

Permanent power was restored to  last week, and lighting should be completed sometime this week, according to a May 2 update posted on the Lower Merion Library System's website.

The bronze bust of Christopher Columbus recently was professionally restored.

The bust of Columbus, which was sculpted by Giuseppe Donato, who was born in 1881 and died in 1965, stands on a 7-ton marble plinth outside the renovated library, said Ludington's Head Librarian Margery Hall.

The sculpture was originally installed in 1952 and was a gift of a committee of Italian Americans on the Main Line, Hall said. There was a big parade and all kinds of other things involved in the celebration. Ludington Library still retains the original newspaper article from that time, Hall said.

In addition to lighting, asphalt paving should also be completed this month. Restrooms, doors and hardware should be installed on the main floor, and a fire alarm and sprinklers should be installed in the basement.

Lower Merion Township Commissioner Scott Zelov has said he anticipates an opening date .
