Lower Merion Boat Ramp Closes After Trailer Sinks

The Parks and Recreation Department will try to retrieve the trailer once the swollen river subsides.

A Lower Merion resident's boat trailer became unmoored at the Flat Rock Park boat ramp Tuesday morning and sank in the Schuylkill River, prompting the indefinite closure of the ramp until Parks and Recreation crews find the trailer, said Lindsay Taylor, the department's director.

"We're trying to figure out how best to find it," Taylor said. "Hopefully, the river will be going down soon."

The rain-swollen river claimed neither the boat itself nor the truck towing the trailer, Taylor said. Flat Rock Park is on River Road, roughly where Gladwyne meets Penn Valley.

The department has notified the Fish and Boat Commission of the situation, township spokeswoman Brenda Viola said.

Said Taylor, "The safety of our citizens is our primary concern. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience and will notify citizens when the safety hazard has been removed."

A sign at the foot of the ramp tells visitors, "Drop off is 25 feet from this point."
