In 2013 the program categories were expanded, providing a greater opportunity to recognize diverse projects in the county. The categories include land development projects that promote excellence in design and planning; revitalization projects that contribute to the revitalization of a community and stimulate economic development; open space projects that focus on land preservation, conservation, and recreational facilities; environmental projects that promote the protection and restoration of natural features and sustainable use of resources; and transportation projects that  improve mobility, enhance safety, and exemplify best planning, engineering, and context-sensitive design and construction.

Winning projects are selected by a committee consisting of members from the Montgomery County Planning Commission Board. Award recipients are honored at an awards presentation and winning projects are featured in publications and on the Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) website.
