Woman Taken to Hospital After Being Trapped in Car by Fallen Tree

Fire officials believe the tree fell due to wind.

One person was trapped inside a vehicle at Rosemont College after a large tree fell on top of it Saturday afternoon.

The tree fell on top of two vehicles in a parking lot at Rosemont College on the 1400 block of Montgomery Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

A woman who was a passenger in one of the cars was trapped inside, and it took police and fire rescue crews about 40 minutes to remove her from the vehicle, Bryn Mawr Fire Co. Chief Danny Kincade said. The other car did not have occupants in it at the time the tree fell, he added.

Members of the Lower Merion Shade Tree Commission assisted using chain saws and a grappler to get part of the tree off the car, Kincade said.

In addition to the Bryn Mawr Fire Co., the Belmont Hills and Penn Wynne Fire companies and Narberth Ambulance crews also responded.

Medics took the woman to Paoli Memorial Hospital for evaluation, he added. The extent of her injuries are unknown at this time.

Several students, including those who could not access their cars in the parking lot because they were blocked by emergency vehicles and crews, gathered to watch the rescue efforts. The student who owned the other car destroyed by the tree declined to be interviewed.

Rosemont College officials have deferred comment until more details become available.
