Coroner: 3-Year-Old's Drowning Death Ruled Accidental

The Bryn Mawr girl drowned Saturday at St. Albans Swim Club in Newtown Square.

The Saturday drowning death of a 3-year-old Bryn Mawr girl at a St. Albans Swim Club pool has been ruled accidental, officials said Tuesday.

Newtown Township police and ambulance in Newtown Square at 4:49 p.m. Saturday, and someone was already administering CPR to the girl upon arrival, Newtown Township Chief of Police Dennis Anderson said Saturday. She was pronounced dead at Bryn Mawr Hospital at 5:40 p.m. Saturday.

The girl, Joan Elizabeth Logan, was 3 years old and was in the middle pool—with a depth of between 3 and 4 feet—at , said Montgomery County Coroner Walter Hofman, adding Logan was 40 inches tall and had not learned to swim yet.

“Her father lost sight of her, and by the time her father found her it was too late,” Hofman said.

Hofman ruled the cause of death drowning and the manner of death accidental. He emphasized how dangerous water can be.

“It doesn’t take long for a bad thing to happen,” Hofman said.
