Riverbend Celebrates Trees on Earth Day!

Riverbend's FREE event, Trees are TREEmendous!, honors Earth Day through learning, community service and fun for all ages.

On Sunday April 22nd, 2012, Riverbend Environmental Education Center will be celebrating Earth Day by hosting Trees are TREEmendous! with presenting sponsor Shreiner Tree Care. From 1:00-4:00 pm adults and children are invited (for free!) to come to Riverbend’s tucked away location at 1950 Spring Mill Road to learn about the importance of trees, participate in service opportunities and enjoy activities for everyone.

Although Riverbend implements their mission of teaching environmental principals to children through hands on learning all year long, they look forward to highlighting trees specifically on Earth Day.

“Every day is Earth Day at Riverbend and it has never been more important to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment.” says Laurie Bachman, Executive Director. “Trees play such an important role and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day than with this fun and educational afternoon”.

Steve Shreiner, owner of Shreiner Tree Care who is sponsoring the event, looks most forward to teaching children about the importance of trees in the environment. “We’re ‘rooting’ for the future on Earth Day”, he says.

At Trees are Treemendous!, various breakout sessions will be led by experts in the field about the benefits of trees, the importance of native vs. non-native trees and plants, choosing trees for your landscape and more! Throughout the afternoon fun activities for children will be going on including nature crafts, story circles and our Tall, Tall Trees Program; which teaches children the fundamentals about trees and their importance to the environment. Riverbend will also provide service opportunities for people such as planting saplings and cutting invasive, non-native vines off of trees and even holding a raffle with great environmental theme prizes from the local community.

Although registration is not required for this free event, those that preregister to
lmatthews@riverbendeec.org will receive a FREE "What tree is that?" Pocket Field Guide. The guide uses beautiful botanical illustrations to help identify any of the more common trees found in the U.S.
