Riverbend and Community Partners Will Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year at the Summer Solstice Celebration
On Friday, Riverbend will be celebrating the beginning of the summer and longest day of the year with fellow community organizations and presenting sponsor, Bryn Mawr Trust Company.
On Friday June 22nd, 2012, Riverbend Environmental Education Center will be celebrating the beginning of the summer and longest day of the year with fellow community organizations and presenting sponsor, Bryn Mawr Trust Company. From 6:00- 8:30 pm families are invited to come to Riverbend’s tucked away location at 1950 Spring Mill Road to participate in various family fun events including stream and pond exploration, a bee keeping demonstration, hikes, hula hooping, arts and crafts and more!
Riverbend enjoys celebrating their mission of teaching environmental principals to children through hands on learning and events that unite their local community. “We are thrilled to host this celebration along with partners and sponsors for the community to enjoy” exclaims Laurie Bachman, Riverbend Executive Director. “This kind of collaboration enriches the community, bringing us together for the benefit of all.” At this year’s Summer Solstice, community partners from Bridlewild Trails, Harriton House, Lower Merion Conservancy, Lower Merion Historical Society and Main Line Art Center will each lead an exciting and interactive activity for the community to enjoy.
While Riverbend leads a pond exploration, campfire and craft, other organizations will offer an activity central to their mission. The Lower Merion Historical Society will have a display of Native American artifacts. These Native Americans called themselves Lenape and their history is our history because they had a direct impact on the early Welsh settlers. Bridlewild Trails Association (BTA) is a nonprofit member-supported community group which maintains and preserves 30 miles of Lower Merion Township walking/riding trails as well as natural open-space sites. BTA will be leading Solstice celebrants on several short walks on trails through Riverbend and its surroundings.

Main Line Art Center’s Arts Alive Mobile will bring two art activities led by Street Squad Artists, prizes and a ton of fun to the Summer Solstice. Throughout the year, the Arts Alive Mobile has delivered fun, prizes and free art projects to school and community events thanks to a generous sponsorship from PNC Arts Alive. Lower Merion Conservancy’s mission of engaging residents in preserving the natural environment and the historic character of the community will shine through their stream exploration activity while the Harriton House’s famous honey bee demonstration will let families get up close and personal with some of their resident bees.
Riverbend is excited to add some new entertaining activities to the event throughout the evening including refreshments provided by Whole Foods, Victory and Yards Brewery, live music by Prose from Dover and Loopdihoops hula hooping with Leah Troiano. This event is free for members of all participating community organizations or a $15 suggested charitable donation per family at the
door so mark your calendar for the brightest night of the year!
