The Night of the Hunter (1955)
A chilling Robert Mitchum gives the performance of his career as a religious fanatic fresh from prison who woos and marries a gullible widow (Shelley Winters), although her children are suspicious of his motives. Based on the widely read 1953 thriller by Davis Grubb and adapted for the screen by Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Agee, this sinister tale of “love and hate” was the sole directorial effort from Mutiny on the Bounty actor Charles Laughton.
Shown in conjunction with a Cinema Classics Seminar, The Night of the Hunter will be introduced by the seminar’s instructor, Christopher Long, M.A.
