The History of Milling in the Mid-Atlantic
The
Conservancy is thrilled to host mill historian, Tony Shahan. His talk uses
images of mills from around the country to discuss topics like what is a mill, what does it take to
support a mill, and what did a grist mill look like throughout America’s
history. Shahan will share his personal experience as Director for the Newlin Grist Mill to explain the types of equipment and water systems used historical
in milling.
Tony Shahan has been working with the
restoration and operation of historic grist mills since 1992. He is a graduate
of the College of the Ozarks and the University of Delaware History and Museum
Studies programs. His diverse career has included working with the National
Park Service, Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs,
private non-profits like Greenbank Mill and Philips Farm, and worked as a
consultant for restoration and milling projects for the past 18 years. For the
past five years, Tony has been the Director for the Newlin Grist Mill in
Concordville, PA. His career has allowed him to explore interests in other
areas of interest include archaeology, historic process, woodworking, masonry,
and other restoration trades.
