Do You Know How to Survive in the Wilderness?

Just because you don't live in the wilderness does not mean you won't find yourself there one day. So Riverbend Environmental Education Center is holding a Wilderness Survival program on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The program will build you survival skills, including starting a fire and building a shelter. Donations will be accepted for the program. You can pre-register at scarr@riverbendeec.org or by calling 610-527-5234 x108.

In other Riverbend news, work is continuing on a planned aquaponics greenhouse.

The Gladwyne facility wants to establish a system wherein military veterans from Veteran Community Farms raise crops and fish together in a greenhouse that would also form the basis of new educational programs. For more about Riverbend's plans, read Patch's interview with director Laurie Bachman.

Also, some experts say that children are spending so much time indoors that they link obesity, attention disorders, and depression to a lack of exposure to the natural world.

Riverbend is picking up on a wave of parents' desire to foster and support the love of nature in young children. Starting in the fall the center will be offering a morning and afternoon kindergarten program at their 30-acre property.
