SM Spa & Nails Offers Nail Salon Prices, Spa Services

Spa manicure-pedicures and waxing feature premium products and services.

SM Spa & Nails, the latest addition to the Bryn Mawr nail salon circuit, seems not to have left any hot stone unturned—combining the convenience and affordability of a standard walk-in nail salon with the premium products and amenities of higher-end spas.

Located across from the Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Lancaster Avenue, it was a photo studio before SM rented and renovated the space a couple months ago. The venue boasts high ceilings, exposed brick, hardwood floors, plush pedicure stations and a state-of-the-art ventilation system.

“We keep the fans constantly running to get rid of the chemical smell,” said Barbra Hur, SM Spa & Nails associate and nail technician. “That’s not good for the customers. Or for us.”

Since opening on March 15, it has slowly but surely been growing a client base, though it does already have some regulars, Hur said.

While SM Spa & Nails offers a slew of the standard nail salon services, its spa manicures and pedicures distinguish it from its competitors, Hur said.

“Our spa pedicures and manicures are really more premium,” Hur said. “We use the highest quality products.”

For SM’s “royal pedicure,” which is one of its most popular services since its grand opening a month ago, honey is massaged as a deep penetrating solution. Hot stones are also used, as well as Chinese wooden sticks for reflexology.

“The hands and the bottom of your feet have pressure points that correspond to your organs,” Hur said. “By massaging them, we improve the circulation to these organs.”

The result is stress and tension relief as well as overall improved physical function, Hur said.

Royal pedicures are priced at $45—$10 more than SM’s regular pedicure, but it offers an extra 15 to 20 minutes of a hot stone massage.

It also offers a lavender spa pedicure, which features an aromatherapy footbath; a citrus spa pedicure, which involves a four-step exfoliating process using vitamins A, E, and C, citrus fruit and marine algae; and a deep ocean spa pedicure, which utilizes a restorative formula with antioxidant properties.

Also a must-get, Hur said, are the waxing services.

“We use waxing sugar honey, which is great for sensitive skin,” Hur said. “After waxing, many people get red and irritated. Not with this product.”

An eyebrow wax costs $12, while bikini waxes start at $30.

Ten-minute and $15 chair massages are also offered—at the end of which hot stones are used. A full hour is also available.

And SM has made a point to be conscientious when it comes to sterilization.

“To keep our tools sanitary, we use UV light heating, liquid sanitizer, sanitizer spray, antibacterial solution—everything,” Hur said. “We are very conscientious about this, because we know how people can get fungus or other infections when the tools aren’t properly cleaned.”

Current promotions include coupons for $5 off spa and regular pedicures and $2 off manicures, as well as its $35 manicure-pedicure junior and senior high school prom special, which runs from this month through June.

SM will also run a college graduation special, offering manicure-pedicures for $40 to graduating college seniors from May to June, and it has been using its Facebook page to post promotions.

It can also accommodate bride and bachelorette party group specials as well as children’s birthday parties.

SM Spa & Nails is open seven days a week: Mondays through Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
