A Cup For a Cause

Area The UPS Store locations host Alex's Lemonade Stands to raise funds for childhood cancer research.

Joining the battle against childhood cancer, the Bryn Mawr-based branch of The UPS Store will host Alex’s Lemonade Stands on Saturday, August 17, from 10 AM until 2 PM.

This will be the second annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand event from the Greater Philadelphia area's seven stores, which together raised $4,200 in their 2012 fundraising efforts.

Store owners Daniel Brady, Kevin Brady, and Stephen Brady, lifelong area residents who opened their first store in 1989, became involved with the fundraiser as a way to give back to the local community.

This Saturday’s Alex’s Lemonade Stand will be the first for The UPS Store in West Chester, which the Brady brothers purchased in January 2013.

“We wanted to get The UPS Stores in the tri-state area involved in a good cause, and Alex’s Lemonade was a perfect fit,” said Daniel Brady, who also serves as president of a marketing co-op for The UPS Store owners in the Philadelphia area. “Our stores have donated mailbox services to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for years, so we already had a relationship with the organization. We also liked that they are locally based, and that a very high percentage – about 90 cents out of every dollar – goes directly toward researching cures and paying for treatments and treatment-related services for patients.”

The stores in the Philadelphia marketing co-op raised $8,061 for Alex’s Lemonade last year, and the group hopes to top those numbers this time around.

“Our team has really embraced the cause, and we’re working to get even more The UPS Store locations involved this year,” Daniel Brady said.

Lemonade and baked goods will be available at each Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and the stores will donate one dollar to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for every package shipped on Saturday.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $60 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding more than 300 research projects nationally.
