German Expressionism emerged from World War I to capture the anguish of a nation through such films as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) and Nosferatu (1922), in which deliberately artificial sets, chiaroscuro lighting, unusual camera angles, and exaggerated acting create a world and psychological state of mind both eerie and dreamlike.
