Bryn Mawr Film Institute: Beginning of Summer

The rest of the month brings classic films, opera, ballet and a sing-along.

School's out, and  is celebrating the summer with 25 summer classics, which kicked off Tuesday evening with a screening of Die Hard and will wrap up August 29 with Casablanca. In between, there are plenty of other much-loved films that will be on the big screen. Also coming in the next few weeks are showings of opera and ballet performances, and a sing-along.

The Dark Crystal (11:30 p.m. Friday, June 15)

BMFI's Late Show series continues on Friday with this Jim Henson film. During the summer, the cult-classic series features 1980s Hollywood oddities. In this 1982 movie, two Gelflings search for a missing shard of the titular great, dark crystal, in order to restore their world.

Aida (1 p.m. Monday, June 18)

This opera is being simulcast from a live performance at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria on Europe's largest natural stage. Ernst Marzendorfer conducts the Verdi opera.

The Lady from Shanghai (7 p.m. Tuesday, June 19)

This visually stunning movie, directed by and starring Orson Welles, also stars his then-wife Rita Hayworth. Hayworth plays a seductress in the 1947 film noir, which will be shown on 35mm film.

The Band Wagon (7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20)

This 1953 Vincente Minnelli musical stars Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse in a backstage look at an actor trying to revitalize his career but with the wrong stage director, with a conflicting vision.

Live Simulcast: Raymonda (11 a.m. Sunday, June 24)

This ballet, performed by the Bolshoi Ballet at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, is a love story about a young woman who is separated from her betrothed when another suitor plots to abduct her.

My Fair Lady Sing-along (7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26)

Sing along with Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins in this musical. The actors starring in Act II Playhouse's production of My Fair Lady through July 1 will be at BMFI to open the sing-along with a live performance. Costumes are encouraged, and those who dress up will receive free popcorn.

All About Eve (7 p.m. Thursday, June 28)

This showbiz drama won six Oscars and stars Bette Davis as an aging actress with a young fan who finagles his way into her life. This film is shown in conjunction with a Summer Classics Seminar, which begins at 6:30 p.m. with a lecture. In addition to the lecture and admission to the film, the seminar also includes a post-film discussion, popcorn, a drink and a reading about the film.

 

Showing now at BMFI are Bernie and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Wes Anderson's new film, Moonrise Kingdom, will begin showing next Friday.
