AIDS Activist, Oscars Attendee Chats with BMFI

The documentary "How to Survive a Plague", featuring Peter Staley, opens Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

Before the Academy Award-nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague plays at Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Wednesday, moviegoers can read BMFI's interview with Main Line native Peter Staley, one of the AIDS activists it features.

Bryn Mawr Film Institute public relations manager Devin Wachs spoke with Staley, who grew up in Berwyn and will be at Wednesday's screening.

Staley attended the Academy Awards ceremony, which he described like this:

It was amazing, kind of dreamlike. As a gay kid, I grew up watching the Oscars from as early as I can remember and I never missed one. I never dreamed in a million years that I’d end up attending them. It was a dream come true—fun and exhilarating. Regardless of the outcome for the film, I had a blast.

Staley also told BMFI about creating the website aidsmeds.com to help HIV-positive people.
