St. Luke United Methodist Church's 135th Anniversary Celebration

Last year, St. Luke Church celebrated its 131st anniversary in Bryn Mawr. This year, the church is celebrating 135 years of faithful ministry. Years fly by quickly enough without skipping some!

There is a simple explanation for this church’s accelerated aging process. The event this summer, which celebrated the 19 Bryn Mawr institutions that are 100 years or older, encouraged church members to look into the history of the church.

They realized that the church had been celebrating its anniversary from the date the building was dedicated rather than the time the congregation was founded. The founding members of St. Luke Church originally met in 1876 (the 100th anniversary of the founding of the United States) at Radnor United Methodist Church.  They decided they wanted a church closer to their homes in their town that had recently changed its name from Humphreysville. Bryn Mawr took on its new name when the Pennsylvania Railroad came to town in 1869.

Sunday’s celebration at 10 am will include a rousing Shaker anthem, “Followers of the Lamb,” from 1847 sung by the St. Luke sanctuary choir; reflections on giving thanks for 135 years by Pastor David Tatgenhorst; and a shared luncheon.  The church will present the Jim McDermott award for congregational service at the luncheon.
