10 Local Newsmakers in 2012

Lower Merion and Narberth residents and workers found themselves at the center of stories this year.

Plenty of people who live and work in Lower Merion and Narberth made big news in 2012; here's Patch's list of just 10 of them.

  1. Amile Jefferson. The Friends Central basketball star chose to attend and play at Duke University after being one of the nation's most highly recruited players.
  2. Kelly Lynn. The Narberth resident became the borough police department's second female officer.
  3. John & Neil McShea. The brothers took over J.R. Monaghan's in Ardmore and rechristened it Jack McShea's, a sister establishment to the popular bar and restaurant McShea's in Narberth.
  4. Mary Jo Daley. The former 20-year Narberth councilwoman was elected state representative of the 148th District, succeeding the retiring Mike Gerber.
  5. Joseph Facciolo. The Belmont Hills dental student won a $1 million jackpot from Acme Markets.
  6. Juliet Goodfriend. The Bryn Mawr Film Institute director oversaw a $5.5 million fundraising campaign and is on the verge of acquiring permits to expand the theater.
  7. Brady McHale. The Gladwyne Fire Company firefighter became famous on Huffington Post Teen for making a prom-date proposal from a fire ladder outside Lower Merion High School.
  8. Ira Pressman. The Bala Cynwyd resident was sentenced to eight years in prison for a $7 million Ponzi scheme.
  9. Alicia Anglin. The Bryn Mawr native was chosen a Phillies ballgirl for the 2012 season.
  10. Doug Cleland. The Lower Merion Township manager's compensation was the subject of many Board of Commissioners debates, between majority Democrats and minority Republicans. The township and Cleland eventually came to terms on a new contract for him.
