New Nursing Expo at Harcum College Offers Professional Development for RNs

Experts in the fields of nursing pharmacology and forensic nursing will be featured at a first-ever Nursing Expo at Harcum College on Saturday, October 19. Registered pharmacist Thomas Viola and Pennsylvania State Health Facility Quality Examiner H. Wallace Welliver III will be the featured presenters.

Viola’s program will provide participants with an update and overview of the 25 most frequently prescribed FDA-approved medications for the past year whose actions, adverse effects, contraindications, and interactions with other medications may impact patient care and treatment planning.

Welliver’s presentation will introduce the various roles of the Forensic Nurse as Death Investigator, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Legal Nurse Consultant, the newest sub-specialty recognized by the American Nurses Association. Law enforcement agencies are combining their resources with forensic nurses to attain more effective outcomes for the victims, general public, and offenders. The positive outcomes of this sub-specialty in nursing will be discussed.

“The Nursing Expo is an important opportunity to reconnect with alumni while helping them meet their required continuing education requirements,” said Theresa Groody, director of Professional Studies at Harcum College. “We hope to make this an annual event and plan to apply for Approved Provider status from PSNA/ANCC in order to offer workshops and certificate courses in many nursing specialty areas.

The program runs from 8:30 am to 4 pm and will be held at the Bryn Mawr campus, 750 Montgomery Avenue. The fee is $110 for alumni and $120 for non-alumni and includes breakfast and lunch. Pre-registration is required and attendance will be limited. The program offers six contact hours accredited by the Pennsylvania State Nursing Association.
