Viewfinder: Rosemont College Soccer

Men's soccer thrives at this once all women's school.

It can take years to build an athletic program regardless of whether at the professional, collegiate or high school level. experienced that challenge over the past three years even though it has had an athletic program for decades. In 2009, the college became coeducational, and with that came the task of building a men's sports program. Today the college's men's sports include basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. For this week's Viewfinder, we visited Rosemont to photograph its men's soccer team take on Keystone College (La Plume, PA).

Soccer is a physically demanding sport with two 45-minute halves separated by a 10-minute break. During play there are the few timeouts for injuries, penalties, and substitutions so players are in action for most of the 90 minutes. Soccer players have to have great endurance in addition to soccer skills. We saw that exhibited by both teams on Saturday. The Rosemont Ravens and Keystone Giants played equally well on the field but excellent goal line defense distinguished Rosemont whose goalkeeper, Nick Hulayew, stopped every shot on goal that had even the remotest possibility of reaching the net. With an assist from Sergio Martinez defender Ryan Brazuk scored there first goal during the first half. Forward Luke McIlvaine scored the Ravens second goal during the second half when he kicked a pass from the sideline into the Giants net.  Final score: Ravens-2, Giants-0.
