Top 5 Local Events To Celebrate The Holidays

Patch brings you a few local holiday events to check out in the coming weeks.

Holiday fun has been happening all month in Lower Merion Township, from First Friday Main Line's caroling and Santa visits, to Narberth's Dickens Festival last weekend. Here's a few activities coming up in the next week to help you celebrate your holidays.

1) The Bryn Mawr Film Institute (824 West Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr) will host a screening and discussion of Ian Abram's "A Christmas Carol: A Unique Take on a Holiday Classic" on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Drexel professor's version of the tale combines scenes from various adaptations. Tickets are $7 for students, $10 for adults, and may be purchased here.

2) The Philadelphia Boys Choir will perform a holiday concert full of festive favorites at Proclamation Presbyterian Church (278 South Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr) on Saturday, Dec. 18. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. concert. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased here.

3) The "Celebration of Creation and Faith" Winter Solstice celebration, hosted by the music ensemble Sanctuary, will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19 at the St. Raphaela Center (616 Coopertown Rd., Haverford). The free event begins at 2 p.m. and will include music and Scriptural reflection.

4) A Winter Solstice Walk will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Havertown, courtesy of the The Haverford Township Recreation Department. The walk will begin at 599 Glendale Rd., Havertown, and will include holiday songs and hot cocoa. There is a $3 registration fee. 5) Many area churches will be holding special Christmas Eve services this year, from early family services to vigils later in the evening. The following is an alphabetical list of directory-listed churches with Christmas Eve services, with information from their websites.

Ardmore Presbyterian Church – Family Service of Carols and Candle Lighting at 7 p.m., Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols at 10 p.m.

Ardmore United Methodist Church – Informal Christmas Eve service for children at 4 p.m., Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 7 p.m.

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church – "A Christmas Alphabet Poem, The Musical Story of the Birth of Jesus" and Christmas Eve candle lighting service at 6:30 p.m.

Penn Wynne Presbyterian Church – Christmas Eve Candlelight Service from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Six:Eight Community of Faith – Christmas Eve service beginning at 10 p.m.

St. George's Episcopal Church – Christmas Eve Children's Service at 4:30 p.m., Christmas Eve Service at 10 p.m.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church – Family service at 5 p.m., Choir concert at 10 p.m., Festival Eucharist at 10:30 p.m.

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church – Candlelight family service at 5 p.m., traditional candlelight service with brass ensemble at 7 p.m., traditional candlelight service with string quartet at 11 p.m.

St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church – Christmas Eve and Sunday School Christmas Pageant (light reception after service), from 7 to 10 p.m.
