Herb Clarke, who served as a weatherman at Channel 10 for 40 years, died at age 84 on Sunday evening at the Beaumont retirement community in Bryn Mawr.

Clarke, who died of complications from Alzheimer's disease, is survived by his wife, Barbara, their three children and three grandchildren, according to NBC 10.

He was passionate about gardening and filed a daily gardening report for KYW Newsradio until 2005, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, and he also worked to promote the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Clarke received the Board of Governors Award at the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards in 2007.

Viewers from across the Philadelphia area posted their condolences on NBC Philadelphia's Facebook page on Sunday night.

"I grew up watching Herb on TV as did many other people in Philly. He lived not far from my house. When I was in grade school he came to my school and read to the kids. When I was older and working at a nursing home he came to read poetry to the residents. When I was standing next to him in a store he made a point to ask me how my day was going. When kids would spray graffiti on the bridge over the trolley tracks, yep Herb would go paint over it. He was just a good, good man!" wrote Rick Kelly of Bryn Mawr.
