Historic Preservation Lecture Series: Old is the New Green! Renovating for Sustainability 

  • When/Where: Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at Merion Friends Meetinghouse, 615 Montgomery Avenue, Merion
  • Why Go: This panel discussion will present expert perspectives on renovating for sustainability, illustrated with a few case studies highlighting different approaches and solutions. The panel will be led by LEED-certified preservation architect John Cluver, co-author of “Saving Energy in Historic Buildings: Balancing Efficiency and Value.” Panelists include Lorna Rosenberg, Green Building Program Manager for EPA Region III; Eric Lowry of Lowry EcoSolutions, which performs energy audits on existing buildings; and Jack Strong of the Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia, a sustainability advocate and funding agency. Illustrated lecture and panel discussion includes a wine-and-cheese reception.
  • Cost: $20 Lower Merion Conservancy members, $25 non-members

Harriton Varsity Football @ Penncrest High School

  • When/Where: Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at Penncrest High School, 134 Barren Road, Media
  • Why Go: If you want to show your school spirit and are up for taking a little drive, take a 20-minute drive to Media and cheer on Harriton's football team as they come up against Penncrest High School.  
  • Cost: Free

Kids Matinee: "Hocus Pocus"

  • When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at Bryn Mawr Film Institute
  • Why Go: Enjoy an old-school (well, to some of us) Halloween favorite, "Hocus Pocus," at Bryn Mawr Film Institute as part of the Saturday Kids Matinee series. The film stars Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker and follows Max and Dani, two kids who just moved to Salem, MA, and accidentally awaken three 17th-century witches.
  • Cost: $5 adults, $4 kids

Celtic Music From Julie Fowlis

  • When/Where: Friday, Oct. 28 from 8 to 11 p.m. at McPherson Auditorium, Goodhart Hall, Bryn Mawr College
  • Why Go: Listen to some lively Celtic music from Julie Fowlis, a singer and muscian who was chosen in 2008 as  the recipient of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Award. London's Evening Standard said of Fowlis: “There are some voices that carry much more than a melody. They transport you to another place, give you goose flesh and make magic out of thin air. Julie Fowlis has just such a voice."
  • Cost: $20 general admission, $18 senior, $10 student with ID, $5 children 12 and under

Halloween in the Garden

  • Where/When: Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Road, Media from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Why Go: Dress up for fun trick-or-treating and a parade with wizards and friends through the Magical Habitats exhibit. See creepy critters up close, experience owl and raptor demonstrations, learn some silly spells, make herbology potions and more. This event happens rain or shine.
  • Cost: Free with admission, no pre-registration required.
