Future of Gladwyne Library Renovations Uncertain

Concerns have been expressed about the cost and necessity of adding an elevator.

An agenda item about renovating Gladwyne and Ardmore libraries simultaneously was tabled early Thursday morning for lack of information about the projects.

Three Gladwyne residents spoke out against the proposed $1.4 million renovations, the most expensive of which would be the installation of an elevator.

Though no one objected to the elevator on the basis of accessibility, there were concerns about what how the installation of an elevator would affect cost, the historical nature of the building and parking.

"I don't think you're even close to ready to couple this with the Ardmore project," said Gladwyne resident Brad Moser.

Commissioner Scott Zelov said $1 million for an elevator at Gladwyne Library sounded expensive and added he did not believe they were ready to move forward with the Ardmore project, either.

"It's 1 in the morning, and we don't have the information we need about either library," said Commissioner Cheryl Gelber.

The item was tabled until next week.
