Baldwin Girls "Do The Math"

Baldwin’s Middle School students have been recognized for their performance in the Pennsylvania Mathematics League Contest and American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8).  Jessica Zhang ’17 was the top Pennsylvania Mathematics League Contest scorer among seventh graders in Montgomery County, and was in a four-way tie for first place among individual scorers statewide. In the AMC 8, which is open students Grade VIII and below, Zhang earned Honor Roll status for scoring among the top 5 percent of students nationwide.

Baldwin’s Grade VII Pennsylvania Math League Contest participants earned Baldwin seventeenth place among the 97 participating schools statewide.  Students included Stephanie Blank, Anne Chen, Anika Iyer, Pallavi Sreedhar and Jessica Zhang.

"Middle School students have demonstrated enthusiastic enjoyment in mathematics this year, from their contributions on Pi Day, their support of each other in the MATHCOUNTS competition, their participation in the Math Marathon and Problem of the Week contests, and their serious efforts on the local and national math contests,” said Cynthia Schmalzried, math department head at Baldwin. “We are looking forward to building on this foundation in the years to come.”

In April, Baldwin’s Middle School math club members achieved Gold Level Status in the MATHCOUNTS Club Program.  This year, approximately 250 schools nationwide secured this designation.
