Agnes Norfleet Called as New Pastor/Head of Staff at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Dr. Agnes W. Norfleet began her ministry on Feb. 3 as the new Pastor/Head of Staff at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (BMPC), a 2600-member congregation that is now the largest church in the Presbyterian Church (USA) to be headed by a woman. In her new role at BMPC, the Rev. Dr. Norfleet will be responsible for leading worship and preaching; moderating the church’s governing body, the Session; and serving as the head of staff, which includes four other pastors. A Service of Installation for the Rev. Dr. Norfleet will take place during worship on April 7 at 10 a.m., when the Rev. Dr. Theodore J. Wardlaw, President of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, will offer the sermon and the Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston, Pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, NY, will participate as a special guest.

“It is with joy that I begin my work among this Bryn Mawr congregation known throughout our denomination to be deeply committed to the nurture of disciples who reach out in service,” the Rev. Dr. Norfleet said. “I look forward to making abiding connections with not only the congregants, but also the Bryn Mawr community, and am honored to lead this church.”

With 25 years of ministry experience, the Rev. Dr. Norfleet is a recognized preacher who proclaims the gospel with clarity, creativity and relevance; an accomplished teacher who engages with Biblical scholars and theologians; and a compassionate pastor who has helped others find hope in God. In addition to the pastoral gifts she offers in her own congregation, she serves the Presbyterian Church (USA) as a Trustee of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va., a leader of NEXT Church, the author of numerous articles and published sermons, Associate Editor of “Journal for Preachers,” and a guest preacher for denominational conferences.

The Rev. Dr. Norfleet earned an M. Div. from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va., in 1986 and a D. Min. in Bible and Preaching from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., in 2001. She has served as Pastor/Head of Staff at North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., from 1992-2005, and Pastor/Head of Staff at Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, from 2005-2012.
